At the end of last month I was able to visit and and work in the unique city of Venice. The Carnival was the main subject for my photographic intentions. Knowing in advance that Venice and its Carnival is one of the most photographed events ever, I was shocked to see the amount of photographers that gathered in San Mark’s square at sunrise trying to get their shot. It was like seeing with my own eyes the fierce competence photographers have at this moment and the ongoing conflict known by most of you about the fact that nowadays anybody can be a photographer.

photographers gather around people wearing mask for the Venice Carnival, Italy.

Waking up before the first light, it was hard to believe that by that time there was more that hundred photographers, all with their gadgets, including all types of light modifiers, stands and specially big and chunky tripods with the legs open, hoping to obtain the perfect and unique shot of the carnival. As you can imagine, to get a clean shot with so may photographers, mixed with normal tourists was nearly an impossible task.
Do not get me wrong, Venice is an amazing city and during Carnival you have the perfect opportunity to improve and enjoy your photography as all of the people wearing masks will pose and happily listen to any posing suggestions. Personally I tried, when I had the chance, to get a different perspective and play with the composition of the shot just by looking to where most of the photographers were and moving away from them hoping and trying my best luck with many people staying in the middle of your shot.

(En Español más abajo)

Just arrived to Poland and the first big snowfall has arrived. This is my third Christmas here and I have to admit that I really enjoy the feeling of having a proper winter. having said that, temperatures can drop quite a lot, specially at night when they can reach up to -25C, way too much for an Spaniard!!.
When it gets too cold outside I really enjoy to sit down by the fireplace and have a good read. Being a travel photographer it is always nice to get new points of view and insides of how other colleagues get their job done and of course learn from it. That is why I would like to recommend the new Mitchell Kanashkevich‘s E-book that just arrived into my hands. In The E-book, called Rabari – Encounters with the nomadic tribe, you will be able to find the whole process that Mitchell goes through in order to achieve his stunning images.

The e-book is very well structured and you will be able to find deep information in how to pose people, lighting diagrams, post production process, equipment used, camera settings and specially how and why he took those pictures.
Without doubt you’ll find valuable information in how to get your travel images a step further.

You can find the E-book in here.

I hope you like it.

Best wishes to all and Merry Christmas!

Felices Fiestas!

A few weeks ago I had the chance to travel to Rissani, a small city situated just before reaching the Moroccan Sahara where I was able to photograph the people working at the fossil workshops.
The Sahara is the world’s second largest desert after Antarctica, but millions years ago it was just the opposite, a much greener and wetter place blooming with life. Nowadays the only testimonies of that are the Fossils than can be found deep under the ground. In the regions close to the Sahara there are people who make a living digging those fossils up and transforming them into beautiful artisan crafts to sell them later in the international fairs and markets.

How I manage to find these people was all part of chance and good luck.
Last year while travelling in Morocco, I went to visit the magnificent desert of Merzouga and to get there I had to stop in Risssani. Walking down the streets of the city I came across a dusty cloud that instantly cough my attention. The cloud itself was created by the huge amount of dust that some people were making while polishing some rocks which turned out to being ancient fossils. Unfortunately, last year I was not able the photograph the workers and the whole process in a proper manners so just a couple of months ago I decided to contact them and try again.

Thanks to my great friend Brahim Mezane, an amazing birdwatching guide in the region and his family, owners of one the Fossil Workshops, I was invited to visit and spend some time to try to get better pictures.
Knowing by my previous visit of the country that many people in Morocco are not very keen in being photographed, I accepted the invitation immediately, thinking it could be a great challenge for myself and also a great story to cover as a personal project.

After more than a week there and a subtle process of convincing and gaining the trust of the workers, I was able not only to photograph them but also now I can proudly say that I made very good friends and learnt amazing things about the Berber culture and their traditions, probably the concept of hospitality being the most important one.

Being a professional photographer can be very tough and sometimes even get you to the point to think that perhaps you are pursuing the wrong career. Luckily and thanks to assignments like the last one I did, I was reassured that photographing people is what I love the most and that I have one of the best professions out there allowing to meet amazing people and keep on learning.

In the assignment I had the chance to photograph and work alongside with amazingly creative people like Marc de Pablo, a professional Dancer/Actor from Barcelona, who asked me to help him to produce some photographs for his professional Portfolio. Marc is an astonishing dancer as well as a very fit athlete and thanks to that, we were able to push a bit further some of the situations in order to get some unique pictures.

Here you can see some of the images taken with Marc and I would to take the opportunity to inform you that I will be teaching together with Oscar Dominguez two Travel workshops in Barcelona and Badajoz next Autumn (you can see all the info at the Workshops section above)

I hope you enjoy the pictures!

It is said that as a photographer you always have to keep an eye for whatever you think could make a good picture but also be ready to start working when a potentially commercial opportunity come across in your path.
Less than two weeks ago I was in Poland, enjoying a nice holidays with my girlfriend when we were invited to visit someone in her family in another city close to the german border. That city was Kostrzyn nad Odra, where funny enough, the biggest open air music Festival in Europe, called Przystanek Woodstock, was taking place. I went to have a look straight away and after a few moments I was already taking pictures.
Even without an accreditation I just wanted to take some shots that i thought they would be of the interests of my editors back in the UK. Music Festivals is something that I do not photograph but some aspects like people having fun in mud and also the magnitude of the place where enough reasons to get me started. After sending the pictures to my editors they were more than happy to take them, so always be ready and carry the camera with you! (and something to clean it too!!)

Those are just a few examples of the pictures I took and you can see the whole gallery here.

As a photographer keeping your own personal projects is a vital part of your job. Working under a more relaxed environment where you set your goals of what you want to achieve with every photograph, will give you the chance to experiment and try new things without the risk of disappointing any costumer and without doubt you will learn new things than you can later apply to your paid jobs.
Having a look around your neighbourhood, you will be able to find plenty of good stories to photograph, it is just up to you to go out and photograph them. Personally, having the chance to do something different than travel photography it is a quite refreshing feeling where I learn lots of new things while helping out my surrounding community and in this case other creative people.
Here you can see some of the shoots taken in my latest personal shoot of a local master ceramicist. They are part of a long term project that I am working on at the moment and for sure will keep me going until the end of the year.
In this profession, being able to combine your personal projects with your paid jobs, it is for sure a good combination to keep your inspiration flowing, so I encourage you to have a look around and find some great stories to photograph.

There is no doubt that social media is a very powerful tool that can get your name and your work out there to be seen by many potential clients. On the other hand, sometimes I have a strong believe that many people (myself included) spend more time improving their social media skills than trying to get better and learn new techniques with their photography. No matter if you are a “pro” or not, at the end of the day as a photographer you should be more concern about creating new images and getting better at your craft than trying to increase the number of followers on Facebook and Twitter.
Being a photographer is not just going out, shoot some pictures and then come back home and just wait for Twitter to work its magic and get hired next day, I am sorry but things do not go quite that way. A photographer among many other should take pictures, research locations, contact and deal with clients, learn from other photographers, edit, keyword and caption uncountable images, be good at business, pay your bills and hopefully have some spare time to enjoy your family if you are lucky enough to have one.
We all have seen a lot of very well renown photographers adapting to this new technologies, that is also part of our job, but first of all they do not forget they are PHOTOGRAPHERS. Unfortunately, becoming a renown photographer takes a lot of time and sacrifice so If you are trying to become one just with your social media skills it might be quite an impossible task. Believe me, If your are starting and trying to follow your own path with your photography like I am, you better start considering those precious extra hours that perhaps you are now loosing in sitting, waiting and wishing in front of the computer, just tweeting, facebooking and hoping for the magic phone call or e-mail to happen.

So in my humble opinion you better focus on your job and go out and shoot!

When you travel without hurry and open to improvisation, sometimes you might find yourself by surprise somewhere that eventually ends up becoming one of the highlights of your trip even if your guidebook says that there are some other places more famous and interesting. For me an example of this was a small village in Tajikistan called Karakul. The town serves as the last stop before crossing the border to Kyrgyzstan situated in the Pamir Highway and the shores of a huge lake with the same name. In theory it was a place of transition for me, but because of the scarceness of transport to take me to the border with Kyrgyzstan, I had to wait several days for this to happen. Thanks to that I had the good fortune to find, meet and photograph many people in that village. The pictures I took there, are definitely some of my favourites of my whole trip along the Silk Road.
Sometimes, in my opinion, those little surprises along the way are the ones that make your trip unique and different to any other. Planning a trip is essential but improvisation is fundamental.

Here you can see some of the images I took in Karakul, you can also see more Images in my gallery of Tajikistan.

If you ever go to Fez and visit its old Medina, there would me many things that will come across but probably one the first ones will be realising that you might be lost and also the scent of a quite strong smell coming from somewhere around. That peculiar odor is coming from the Tanneries, an ancient place in Fez dating from medieval times where animal hides get coloured, only men are allowed to work and the knowledge for the profession passes from generation to generation.

The Tannery of Chouwara is the oldest and biggest in Morocco and being able visit is without doubt one of the highlights of my trip in Morocco. You will probably be invited by a shop owner near the tanneries so you can see the people work and then he can nicely suggest you some of the skin products made in the coloured pools just below. Looking from above from the shop’s terrace while you smell the fresh mint they will offer, you will see men walking around, carrying skins from one pile and taking it to the other, shouting, adding water to the pools or simply just trying to clean themselves. That’s quite an scene, but it is not until you convince the guard at the entrance downstairs and manage to get in that you can realise how hard and dangerous the work conditions are in that place, not to mention the horrible stench. Let’s say that the health and safety work conditions still are measured as if they were in the middle age when these pools were created.

Walking through the Medina you will see many shops selling colourful babouches, handbags and many other products made of animal skins. After you pay a visit to the tanneries, it is nearly guaranteed that you will have a different perspective and appreciation for those goods and even consider buying some without bargaining as mush as you are supposed to.

That’s a good marketing strategy.
